Ever been somewhere and feel like an alien? You meet people, you go places, and you realize how different things are between you and them. I've been to Stone & Thistle Farm (my relatives place) since I was a toddler, but only recently have I noticed how different their community is compared to mine. They live in what I would offensively call "hicktown", where there are more domesticated animals than people. I hear country music, I see John Deere t-shirts and caps left and right, and I look like a strange mofo driving my Celica around in the ice and snow.
My cousin joined the Army (for those who don't know), and I went to see him for New Year's and see him off back to Ft. Benning in GA. He's a good guy, and he's not for the war anymore than anyone else; he just wanted a challenge and a chance to get away, see new things. Being around some of his HS classmates reminds me why I try to hang out with older people who aren't quite so...what's the word? Ah, yes, ignorant. I actually feel bad for these kids who are isolated and have no opportunity to see what's out there and what they could accomplish. For many of them, they have few options when it comes to college, and often don't go at all or join the Armed Forces. I saw at least 10 guys at the Albany airport all flying on the same plane with my cousin, which just goes to show how the area is a harvesting ground for fresh meat (and I don't mean for eating). The poor and the uneducated are the ones who fight in our wars started by rich old white men who have no idea how most of "their country" lives. How disgusting, and how sad that so few people are mad about it.
I can't wait to get some shit started, because I've seen enough suffering and anguish for a lifetime.
Feel free to join in.
